"It's the end of the World Cup as we know it...

...and I don't care?"

Ever since USA's 1 - 2 loss to Ghana yesterday, the TV news channels here seem to have reached an agreement to pretend there is no World Cup football going on anymore! If you watched any of them today, you would be led to believe that so devastated are the other teams by the "shock" exit of a team which ended up scoring only 1 goal in the tournament that they have decided to pack their bags and head home as well, effective ending the WC...until 2010!

Or alternately, Group E with USA, Ghana, Italy and Czech Republic was apparently the only group in this year's World Cup. Just for a lark, the organizers decided to have a group phase with only one group in it and named that group after the fifth letter in the alphabet. Yes, that makes much more sense.

No, they were so upset that they could not christen this team as "world champions", just like how they call their NBA champions, superbowl winners and MLB winners. Welcome to the real "world competition"

Yes, I was going to mention that too! US sports are so self-absorbed that national winners are called world champions. I think its an arrogant little in-joke among sportsteams and sportswriters here, its like they are trying to say "Take that world! What happens in the US is the only thing that matters!"

Like you say, unfortunately for them, in the real world the US has lost in baseball, basketball and now football world champtionships! Ha-ha!
